Thank you MLB Player's Trust and Action Team!

On Saturday, May 21, Major Leaguers Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, and Ben Francisco of the Philadelphia Phillies and high school students from Philadelphia-area Action Teams came together for a morning of fun and community service by landscaping and creating a mural at Volunteers of America Delaware Valley’s Addiction Treatment Program.

From 10 a.m. to noon, ballplayers and students worked side by side and planted flowers and plants and painted a mural and garden stones to brighten up the outside of the program.  Volunteers of America Delaware Valley’s Addiction Treatment Program in Camden opened in May 2010 and serves both men and women recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. Then on Tuesday, Action Team Captains were recognized on the field for their efforts just prior to the start of the Phillies game.

Local Action Teams include students from West Deptford High School, Philadelphia Electrical and Technology Charter High School, Camden Charter and Gloucester Catholic.

Administered by Volunteers of America and the Major League Baseball Players Trust, the Action Team national youth volunteer program encourages young people throughout the United States to volunteer in their communities. Launched in 2003, the Action Team program now enjoys the support of more than 160 high schools in 33 states and Puerto Rico. Since its inception, the Action Team has inspired more than 26,000 high school students to help over 111,000 people in need. In 2010-2011, more than 800 Action Team Captains have planned over 400 volunteer projects in their communities.

Last year, local ballplayers and Action Team students volunteered at Volunteers of America Delaware Valley’s Lindenwold Towers affordable senior housing. Ben Francisco, Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard joined students to build a gazebo, plant a garden and entertain residents.
